Fishing in Northumberland

Fishing in Northumberland comprises three main types - river, still water and sea fishing - making Northumberland a popular destination for anglers.

River fishing is available to the casual angler and permits are available to fish on rivers such as the Tweed, the Tyne, the Wansbeck and the Coquet.

For those who prefer to fish in still waters, Northumberland can offer a number of lakes for both coarse and trout fishing, amidst some of England’s most beautiful scenery.

If you are a keen sea fisherman then look no further than the county’s shores. Whether by boat or from the land you’ll have hours of entertaining sport.

Local fishing tackle shops are not only a source of bait and equipment, but also excellent advice as to where to fish and what bait to use. Permits are required for fishing in Northumberland, as well as a national Environment Agency Rod License (available at Post Offices), so be sure to ask about these at the tackle shops.
