Alnwick

Alnwick was recently voted the best place to live in Britain by Country Life magazine. There were several criteria which had to be met including the best for community, beauty, local produce and affordability. Alnwick came in number one ‘by a country mile’.

Alnwick is filled with history. Alnwick Castle, which dominates the landscape, has been the home of the Dukes of Northumberland since 1309 and more recently shot to fame as a result of the Harry Potter films. Close to the Castle are the magnificent Alnwick Gardens which are a ‘must’ to see when visiting Alnwick.

Alnwick has a weekly farmer’s market, thereby checking the local produce criteria, which draws people in from far and wide. The Centre has an interesting range of shops and, in the old Victorian Railway Station, one can find Barter Books with its large range of second hand books.

Alnwick is well located for other attractions in Northumberland. It is close to the spectacular coastline and is a good starting point for exploring the Cheviots and Northumberland National Park. The nearby train station of Alnmouth serves Alnwick offering trains from both London and Edinburgh.

Alnwick has numerous hotels, bed and breakfasts and other accommodation and is well served by restaurants and pubs.
