Hexham

Hexham is a busy market town sitting alongside the River Tyne, some 20 miles to the west of Newcastle Upon Tyne.

The centrepiece of Hexham is its Abbey built in the 7th Century and where the crypt can be visited by the public when services allow. Around the market square, with its covered market, are a range of both multiple and independent retail shops including book shops, antique shops and galleries and other shops of interest.

Close to the Abbey is Hexham Old Gaol ( now the Border History Museum) and the Moot Hall, once the administrative centre for medieval Hexhamshire.

In 2005, Country Life magazine awarded Hexham the title of 'England's Favourite Town'. Justifiably so, one can enjoy several hours looking around and admiring this historic town.

Hexham is also known for its racecourse and which has been the home of National Hunt racing in the County for over a century. Within close proximity of Hexham are 3 golf courses including the 2 courses at Slaley Hall. One of the Slaley Hall courses, the Hunting Course is an official PGA European Tour Venue.

Hexham is conveniently located for a visit to Hadrians Wall and is situated in excellent walking country. As well as the A69 road from Newcastle Upon Tyne, Hexham is also served by the trainline which runs between Newcastle Upon Tyne and Carlisle.
