Shopping in Northumberland

Shopping in Northumberland covers all tastes from modern shopping centres in towns to the more traditional outlets in rural Northumberland.

The Newcastle Upon Tyne area is home to several shopping centres, most notably the MetroCentre and Eldon Square. The former is located in Gateshead, some 3 miles to the south west of Newcastle Upon Tyne. The latter is centrally located. Both have Department stores and numerous shops and MetroCentre, Europe's largest shopping and leisure centre, also has a cinema complex, bowling facility and a variety of restaurants.

Shopping in Northumberland offers a broad mix of independent shops. There are farmers markets to visit, antique shops, second hand book shops and shops selling local wool products. Otterburn Mill, for example, houses a retail area specialising in woollen products including the famous Otterburn Pram Rug.

One of Europe's largest second hand book shops, Barter Books (Telephone 01665 604888), can be found in Alnwick. The shop is in the old Victorian railway station and covers some 32,000 sq feet almost all of which is devoted to books on every subject imaginable.
